Museum of Jurassic Technology

Brand Identity

A modern touch was given to the Museum of Jurassic Technology. Utilizing its mysterious and overwhelmingly odd characteristics, a series of symbols were produced to represent the values of the institution. The symbols visually evoked the elusive nature of the institution while creating a complex structure in navigating its audience through varied methods, whether through wayfinding, identifying employees, or categorizing information within the museum.

Clues to a Mystery

As research unraveled, it seemed that the museum’s current identity is based on a Pre-Colombian carving more familiarly known as “Mr. J”. The proposed identity system represents what could be the institution’s values while maintaining the ambiguous and clever qualities MJT posesses. Each symbol is almost a piece to a puzzle for its viewer.

For official media items, the symbols would be applied subtly in the background and probably at random. This is to not only highlight each symbol, but to continue the playful curiosity it promotes. Furthermore, the business cards are printed with thermo chromic pigments which allow the information to be revealed when held by hand.

Establishing a Presence

Unsure whether intentional or not, the museum had no social media presence and the website literally appears to have been created at the same time as the internet was born and was never updated since. This inactivity is practically in line with the brand of the institution, and one cannot help but smile at this act. However, in case it was not intentional, I took the liberty of updating its digital presence while keeping the historical fun.
