Barbie x Mark Ryden

Mark Ryden collaborated with Mattel to visualize Barbie in a new universe. Two entities that I’ve enjoyed at very different ages have merged together and I couldn’t have been happier with the result of it. Ryden’s unique and distinct method of curating these surreal worlds seemingly blended so effortlessly within that of Barbie’s. The exhibit displays his processes and final results, having a designated section to peek into each character’s world.

“She is a symbol of aspiration itself; of feminine empowerment, possibility, and potential.”

As a kid I was absolutely obsessed with Barbie, how dynamic her style was and how she had this entire world that was hers and she could be anything in it. This feeling Barbie gave me, is exactly what Mark Ryden speaks about in his artist statement. The phenomenon that is Barbie has captivated generations, being the first doll to be a symbol of feminism. Ryden makes this point that prior to Barbie, dolls were only for teaching how to raise children. He continues to showcase how her brand helps young girls everywhere see themselves in this world, and as they grow, believe in the possibilities, and eventually take ownership of their future. It is absolutely amazing to witness the evolution of Barbie and see how she has kept relevant after all this time.
